The short version
Last updated: September 30, 2026
- 🎮 What you enter in the game stays on your device. No accounts, no sign-up, no forms. Player names and scores live only in your browser, on your device — they are never sent to us or to anyone else.
- 📖 Guide pages may show ads. To keep the game free, our guide pages (rules, word lists, questions, large groups) may display advertising served by Google AdSense. Ads never appear inside the game — not during setup, the secret reveal, discussion or voting.
- 📊 Usage statistics. We use Google Analytics, Microsoft Clarity and the cookie-free Cloudflare Web Analytics to understand how the site is used — for example, which pages are visited, from which devices, and where people tap. Google Analytics and Clarity use cookies — in Europe, only if you allow them — and they never receive the names, scores or words from your game.
- 🙋 You stay in control. Where the law requires it, analytics cookies and ads are used only after you make a consent choice — and you can change that choice at any time.
What is stored on your device
"The Impostor" runs entirely in your browser. The only game data that exists is stored locally, on your own device:
- Player names and scores — saved in your browser's local storage (localStorage) so refreshing the page doesn't erase your game. This information never leaves your device.
- Game preferences — settings like sounds, language and the timer, saved the same way, locally only.
- Game files — cached by the browser (Service Worker) so you can play even without internet.
Clearing the site's data in your browser settings permanently deletes all of it. We have no copy — because none of it is ever sent to us.
Advertising on guide pages
To keep The Impostor completely free, the site's guide pages may display advertising served by Google AdSense. Two promises first: ads never appear inside the game screens themselves, and we never use pop-ups or ads that cover the content you're reading.
When ads are shown, Google and its partners — as third-party vendors — may use cookies and similar technologies (such as device identifiers) to serve and measure ads, including ads personalized based on your prior visits to this and other websites. Google's use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads based on your visits to this site and/or other sites on the internet.
- Opt out of personalized ads — visit Google Ads Settings, or www.aboutads.info to opt out of some other third-party vendors' cookies for personalized advertising.
- How Google uses data — explained at How Google uses information from sites that use its services.
- Non-personalized ads — where personalized ads are off, ads may still use cookies for basic purposes such as frequency capping, fraud prevention and aggregate reporting.
Your choices and consent
- 🇪🇺 European Economic Area, the UK and Switzerland — before any personalized advertising, you will be asked for consent through a Google-certified consent management platform (IAB Transparency & Consent Framework). You can decline, and you can change or withdraw your choice at any time via the "Privacy settings" link shown at the bottom of pages where ads are active. Analytics cookies are likewise off until you allow them in the cookie banner (see Analytics).
- 🇺🇸 United States state privacy laws — residents of states with applicable privacy laws (such as California) can opt out of the "sale" or "sharing" of personal information for targeted advertising via the same privacy controls on ad-enabled pages. We do not otherwise sell personal information — we don't have any.
- 🌍 Everywhere — you can additionally limit advertising cookies in your browser settings, or use the Google opt-out links above.
Analytics
We use three analytics services, on every page of the site, to understand how it is used and make it better:
- Google Analytics 4 (a Google service) — measures usage such as pages viewed, time on the site, device and browser type, approximate location (country and city, derived from your IP address, which Google Analytics does not log or store) and how you arrived — for example, from a search engine. It sets first-party cookies (such as
_ga) to tell visits apart. It never receives the player names, scores or secret words of your game. Learn more at How Google uses information from sites that use its services; to opt out, use the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on or block cookies for this site in your browser. - Microsoft Clarity (a Microsoft service) — captures how you use and interact with the site through behavioral metrics, heatmaps and session replay (clicks, taps, scrolling and page layout), so we can spot what's confusing and fix it. Usage data is captured using first- and third-party cookies (such as
_clckand_clsk) and similar technologies. The game screens are masked in recordings, so Clarity never sees player names, scores or secret words. For how Microsoft collects and uses data, see the Microsoft Privacy Statement. - Cloudflare Web Analytics — cookie-free, aggregate visit counting. It sets no cookies, stores no personal profiles, and does not track you across other websites.
In the European Economic Area, the UK and Switzerland, analytics cookies are used only if you allow them in the small banner at the bottom of the page. Until then — or if you decline — Microsoft Clarity doesn't load at all, and Google Analytics sets no cookies and receives only basic signals without cookies or identifiers (for example, that a page was viewed). Elsewhere, analytics is on by default, and anyone can decline — which also switches Clarity off and deletes its cookies.
We use this data only to understand and improve the site, and we never sell it. Beyond these three services we run no tracking pixels.
Children and teens
The game is suitable for the whole family. We never ask anyone — including minors — for personal information, and nothing typed into the game leaves the device; the only data we receive is the usage statistics described under Analytics. Advertising on guide pages is configured to exclude sensitive ad categories. The game screens themselves always remain ad-free.
Changes to this policy
If this policy is updated — for example, when advertising or analytics services are switched on, changed or removed — we will update the date at the top of this page. Continued use of the site constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
